The Garden

The garden became significant in my practice in the early 1980s. First as a source of material for my still life photographs, then, as I became involved in making a garden, a space of more general intrigue.

Of the series' included in this collection "The Neglected Garden" and "Apple Time" were 'found' still life but in the same space I began to photograph thistles. The thistle work became my first still life series which was sustained over a long period and established many of the ways of working developed in the tulip series and later still life imagery.

The discovery of the garden centre was a surprise and a delight! Strange places selling much more than plants; a treasure trove of subjects. The work resulted in an exhibition 'To Make a Garden'.
